Triangle Home Medical Equipment Providers Rally for Jobs During President Obama Visit

Expansion of Disastrous Medicare Bidding System Costing Jobs, Threatening Patient Care

Dozens of stakeholders from the Triangle’s home medical equipment (HME) industry grabbed homemade signs and rallied for jobs around the corner from where President Obama touted his jobs bill at a local business that outsources jobs to Costa Rica.

Organized by the North Carolina Association for Medical Equipment Services (NCAMES), the rally was designed to bring attention to Obama administration policies decimating home medical equipment providers and their employees, such as expansion of the disastrous Medicare bidding system for HME providers.

Dear NCAMES Members:

Last night, WRAL-TV in Raleigh broadcast a story on Medicare waste during its 6 p.m. newscast. The piece focused on the cost differential between a rent-to-own wheel chair paid for by Medicare vs. a wheelchair purchased by a patient.

NCAMES is Featured on Channel 14 News 

NCAMES did a story on News Carolina Channel 14 on January 18, 2010 at Triangle Aftercare in Durham. The reporter focused on the loss of patient choice, patient confusion, and the loss of jobs that will stem from the Restricting DMEPOS Bidding Program slated to come to the Charlotte area January 2011 and the Raleigh/Durham, Asheville and Greensboro, High Point areas the following year. Legislation in Congress, HR 3790 will halt this program while still saving the government money.

NCAMES Winter Meeting Focused on Threat to Home Healthcare

The NCAMES 2010 Winter Meeting washeld in Greensboro which is one of the locations in which Medicare wants to launch the restrictive bidding program. NCAMES’ goal at this meeting was to educate our members and stakeholders what this threat to home care means and how to survive it. The 2010 NCAMES Board of Officers and Directors were also elected to serve the growing membership of their association.

NCAMES Continues to get the word out!

NCAMES has sent a press release out to media outlets across the state regarding the flawed bidding program’s re-start. NCAMES hosted the bidding seminar last week in Charlotte and it’s important to get the word out about ANYTHING relating to this program that we are trying to eliminate with support for H.R. 3790. This will also be sent to all 13 members of Congress and Senators Hagan and Burr.

NCAMES sends Press Release to Membership

NCAMES is taking a proactive approach to strengthening support on behalf of industry, government, and consumer stakeholders for increasing awareness of our industry throughout North Carolina by using a public relations firm, Menzies Consulting, Inc. This North Carolina based firm will help NCAMES get our message across in an organized, effective manner. Our first mission is to repeal the restrictive bidding program for DMEPOS, educate others about the importance of preventing reduced access to care for beneficiaries and prevent a declining quality of care.
